Wajdi Riahi Trio - Essia
ESSIA
Essia, the new album from Wajdi Riahi Trio, is a delicate weave of light, suppleyet dense textures: craftsmanship that is both subtle and robust. Wajdi revealshis lyricism throughout the songs, each of which stands alone but, like acollection of short stories, ultimately form a cohesive whole.
Where the first album Mhamdeya was steeped in nostalgia, this second opustells of a journey between the pianist’s two horizons: Tunis and Brussels.
Stambeli and Gnawa music are an integral part of the album. The organicarchitecture of these (North) African rhythms blends with the complexity ofjazz.
Virtuosic yet poetic, the trio touches the ground and the sky. Hurty’s drumsstand out for their precision and dynamics, navigating the music withdetermination and serenity. Rahola’s double bass brings a reassuring soundreminiscent of Charlie Heiden, surprising us with soaring moments in hischosen silences.
Riahi, in addition to the delightful, controlled progression of his hands from thepiano to the Rhodes, brings us his whistling and his voice. Moving between freemelodies and Arabic songs, he thus reveals a more vulnerable and fragile partof his artistic personality. This envelops the repertoire in a warm, gentle fuzzthat contrasts remarkably with the sound of the Krakebs, who reverberate atother times
Wajdi’s trio was formed in Brussels in 2020. The three musicians – Wajdi Riahi(piano), Basile Rahola (double bass) and Pierre Hurty (drums) – are inseparable, united by a strong friendship and their involvement in a number of musicalprojects.
At the suggestion of Spanish label Fresh Sounds Records, the trio recorded theirfirst repertoire, Mhamdeya, named after the Tunisian city where Riahi grew up.The opus was released in 2022 and was immediately praised by the Belgian andFrench press. It brought the trio to the stages of clubs and festivals during a finefirst tour in belgium and in France. The group was also selected as one of thethree finalists in the Gent Jazz Young Talent 2023 competition.
In June 2023, the group immortalizes its second repertoire at the legendary LaBuissonne studio in the south of France. Essia is released on the Spanish labelon Dec. 1, 2023, with several major concerts scheduled for 2024.
Stambeli and Gnawa music form the basis of this second album. The organicarchitecture of these (North) African rhythms fuses with the complex, densefabric of jazz.

PRESS REVIEWS
FIP “Between Tunis and Brussels, the virtuosic poetry of the Wajdi Riahi Trio. A journey into the freedom of jazz, transcended by the stambeli of Sub-Saharan Africa and Sufi music.”
Citizen Jazz “A young talent emerging on the Brussels scene, pianist Wajdi Riahi is someone you want to follow. Everything here is a memory, without pathos but with an elegance of restraint. Essia is an album full of promise that confirms the keen interest in these young musicians.“
