Pioneers of ethio-jazz and afro-groove in France
Arat Kilo, pioneers of ethio-jazz and afro-groove in France since their formation in 2008, were born from the meeting of guitarist Fabien Girard, saxophonist Michaël Havard and bassist Samuel Hirsch at a festival in the French Alps, later joined by drummer Florent Berteau, percussionist Gérald Bonnegrace and trumpeter-pianist Aristide Gonçalves.
Inspired by the legendary Éthiopiques compilations and the vibrant spirit of Addis Ababa, they forged a distinctive sound that has evolved through acclaimed projects such as A Night in Abyssinia (with Rokia Traoré, SoCalled and mentor Mulatu Astatke), 12 Days in Addis (2012), Nouvelle fleur (2016), and collaborations with Malian singer Mamani Keïta and American rapper Mike Ladd on Visions of Selam (2018) and De Kaboul à Bamako: Sowal Diabi (2022).
In 2024, they return with Danama (“trustworthy” in Bambara), their fifth album and a luminous call for confidence, optimism and collective strength. Blending Ethiopian scales with hip-hop, afro-groove and new influences from jersey club, UK 2-step and New Orleans brass—alongside the voices of Keïta and Ladd—Danama offers an electrifying, genre-defying journey that reaffirms Arat Kilo’s place as one of Europe’s most original and socially conscious ensembles.

Arat Kilo, die Ethio-Jazzer aus Frankreich, Mamani Keita, ihre Sängerin aus Mali und der amerikanische Wortakrobat Mike Ladd legen ein neues Werk vor – verschachtelt.
Ladd ist mit seinen Wortkaskaden präsenter denn je, Mamani ist mehr mittendrin, etwas seltener explizit Frontfrau, und Elektronik hat Einzug gehalten. Ich musste erst die persönlichen Erwartungen wegräumen, bis die neuen Stücke scheinen konnten. Denn alles ist da: die Bandpower – mit etwas weniger Ethio-Schimmer; Ladd mit nachdenklichen und kraftvollen (Zeit)Geschichten, und Mamani Keita mit Zwischenrufen und den sehr groovigen Ausflügen ans Frontmikrofon. Es gibt einige Abschnitte, die ich bisher noch mit fragenden Ohren anhöre, und ich werde mir die Texte von Ladd beschaffen müssen, um dieses dichte, etwas wuchernde Album besser verstehen zu können.
Ein Album mit Wucht und Ideen, die einem aber nicht gleich ins Ohr springen.

So Arat Kilo are back: The same band, the same collective strength, the same fight for values, their new album “Danama” carries the demand for a better world even further, with words of hope from singer Mamani Keita and the social critique of American MC and poet Mike Ladd!
